The creative process in architecture: how to face challenges with practical experiences
Creativity is a pillar of architectural design, since it transcends the aesthetic to become a strategic tool in the face of spatial challenges. Each project requires a balance between technical knowledge, experience and a structured method that optimizes decision making.
When beginning professional practice, learning is built with constant work, solving real problems and collaborating with specialists. In my case, after completing my bachelor's and master's degrees, I joinedTeam Architecturewith architect Elmer Moreno, where I participated in high-level residential projects. This experience enriched my creative process and consolidated my methodological approach.
The creative process in architecture: a structured methodology
Each architect defines his own method, but there are common principles in the sector. Analyzing the operations of offices with experience, learning from developers with effective processes and updating yourself in advanced methodologies is key. Continuous training, through specialized literature, digital content or exchange with colleagues, strengthens creative and problem-solving capacity.

Define objectives and principles of the architectural program
Each project responds to a specific need. It is essential to ask strategic questions to understand the client's objectives and align each decision with available resources. During this process, I establish a precise dialogue to interpret your expectations and define clear design criteria. Before any sketch, I document agreements in a contract and establish a down payment that marks the formal start of work.
Project visualization
With the contract defined and the requirements clear, technical documentation is compiled, the site is surveyed and its conditions are analyzed. Visualizing the project allows you to foresee its impact on the environment and anticipate strategic decisions. In this phase, artificial intelligence is a valuable tool for regulatory analysis and efficient planning, providing speed and precision.
Brainstorming and conceptualization
This phase involves developing operating and zoning diagrams, using tools such asFreeformon iPad Pro for initial sketches. The key is to generate multiple options without restrictions, prioritizing quantity over quality. Handwriting remains an effective technique for streamlining the creative flow. By applying GTD, I capture all ideas without initially filtering them, allowing for freer and more efficient exploration.
Project development and component organization
Once the main ideas are defined, the project is structured using three-dimensional modeling in BIM. Aspects such as foundations, installations, materials and finishes are considered with precise data in spreadsheets to guarantee technical coherence and constructive feasibility.
Presentation of the preliminary project and next steps
The preliminary project is presented to the client with plans in a manageable format and a digital simulation of the spatial route. This stage allows for agile adjustments without affecting productivity. It is essential to correctly manage expectations and define the next steps precisely to keep the project moving smoothly.
Final project presentation
In this phase, complete technical documentation is developed with detailed architectural plans, including floor plans, sections, elevations, structural diagrams and specialized installations. Parametric models and security strategies are integrated into the design. Finally, the closing of the contract is formalized with the established agreements to avoid subsequent discrepancies.
How to address challenges with practical experience
To efficiently manage each project, I have developed customized digital tools within Microsoft Office 365, including an Excel called "Full Project Kit", which allows control of each phase of the design. This methodology facilitates team coordination and guarantees precise monitoring of progress.
Some projects that have represented significant challenges include:
Atilano House:Â Located on a slope greater than 25%, it required advanced structural solutions to integrate a furniture store on the ground floor and a residence on upper levels. The experience reinforced the importance of defining clear contractual boundaries.
San Gil House:Â Artificial intelligence was implemented to select suitable plant species, optimizing the sustainability of the landscape design.
Santa Catarina Hacienda:Â In a colonial and wooded environment, this project allowed a creative process to be applied with total freedom, achieving a harmonious integration with the landscape and a significant level of detail.
Final considerations
The creative process in architecture is not limited to intuition; It is a combination of exploration, knowledge and strategic planning. Updating regulations, design techniques and digital tools is essential to face the challenges of the sector and constantly evolve.
